Woven Rose - Learn how to do this Modern Embroidery Technique

This image shows a punch needle fabric - Monk's Cloth - available for purchase from the Clever Poppy Shop.

      Introduction

Hello modern embroidery fans, today we are going over a technique that I just love to use in my floral designs, the Woven Rose!

This technique can be used to create a beautiful flower with so much texture. It can be a bit time-consuming, but it is well worth the effort as you’ll love the result and get lots of wow-factor.

This technique is perfect to create, surprisingly enough, roses!

So, how can we create a woven rose?

      Step 1

Start by making a 5-pointed star. To do this, bring your needle up from the back of the fabric and stitch straight stitches radiating out from a centre point. Then knot this star off.

TIP: The star needs to be an uneven number of spokes, otherwise the weaving part we do next won’t work very well. And it helps if the spokes are all evenly distributed around the circle.

      Step 2

Take a new piece of thread, and bring it up near the centre of the star (not in the centre, but just to the side).

      Step 3

Now the fun part, weaving the woven rose! To do this, just go under the first spoke, over the second, under the third, and so on.

As you go around, make sure you are doing the opposite ‘under or over’ as you did on the previous round. This is how you will get the woven look.

Note that you aren’t actually piercing the fabric as you weave the rose, you are just going over and under the spokes of the star - your needle stays on the top side of the fabric the whole time.

TIP: Don’t pull the floss too tight, otherwise all the threads will bunch up and you won’t get a nice circular look. You can use some light pressure on the rose with your finger to hold the threads in place, as you weave around.

When you’re done, pull the thread through to the back and secure this off at the underside of the fabric.

      Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know how to create gorgeous woven roses, perfect for any embroidery pattern. This stitch can be quite tricky to get right at first, especially getting the woven round of the flower even and looking gorgeous. But once you’ve made a few roses, you’ll have gotten into the swing of it!

So there you have it, my straight forward instructions and tips so that you can make your own woven roses.

Examples of Straight Stitch in my patterns

Let's look at some examples of how you can use this awesome foundation stitch in your work! First up, here's my Blooming Lovely pattern. See the three Woven Roses, aren't they beautiful?

How about this pattern - Scandi Blooms? It has a lovely big Woven Rose on the left flower, full of stunning texture.

And one more - check out the stunning Woven Roses in my pattern The Gardening Bee. For these roses, I actually pulled the thread quite tight as I wove around, and this made the roses quite dense and high. I just love them!

      What's next?

If you enjoyed learning how to do woven roses, then you may also enjoy my Modern Embroidery Foundation Course.

This course takes you through all the beginner techniques and knowledge you need to make your first beginner pattern, Little Wildflower Meadow! Plus, it includes a beautiful second pattern, Blooming Lovely. Both of these patterns include the use of woven roses, so this is a perfect way to test your newfound skills!

I would totally recommend this course, as it covers more stitch techniques than this blog, and you can also do it at your own place. Plus, this is a great way to hold yourself accountable for your own me-time and continue on your path to becoming a modern embroidery superstar.
